How many times have you ended a thought with, “Meh, that’s just wishful thinking” or “Yeah, that’d be nice but whatever?”
Can you recount the times you decided to sit back and let things pass by because it would be hard otherwise or people were telling you it wouldn’t work?
When was the last time you quit while you were ahead because one or a few told you it wasn’t worth it?
And do you regret it?
Do you wonder what would’ve happened if you stuck with it a little longer or taken the plunge?
Do you wonder about that a lot?
Is it possible you robbed your family, community, or even the world of something good? Something it needed?
Could your small dent have caused a ripple of ideas leading to something that would’ve healed a big problem, made a positive change, or shaped the future?
What were you thinking?
What was I thinking?!
Whatever happened to fighting my natural inclination towards comfort and “the sure things” to go for the risky option just because it gave me a shot at doing something I believed in?
Don’t we tell kids to ignore the bullies and haters, and follow their dreams instead? Is there an unwritten rule that said I needed to kill that notion when I became a grown-up?
Are the haters telling me that all of my big ideas are really too crazy to work?
Is it too crazy and pointless to want to show people how good it is to be good by being good?
Is it too crazy and stupid to want to be a good, generous person and help those that need it?
Is it too crazy and futile for me to wish to see people find joy in generosity?
Am I destined to follow the norm because I have to, because there’s no other choice? Or are there choices but I let them pass by because it’s easier than going against the current?
Is that how great things are done in this world?
So why should it stop me from trying to make a real dent in the world, doing whatever it is I dream of doing just because I believe it’s right, regardless of whether people say it’ll work or not?
Is this year going to be the same as last year?
This year, I’m making a dent. I’m going to find and bring to light stories of social good. I’m going to help as many people as I can, online and offline. And I want to keep motivating those who are already doing great works in our communities because we all know how hard their job is and they could always use a little more encouragement.
I want to help inspire generosity. And that’s something I think all of us can do; it sounds big and grand—and it is—but it’s not unrealistic.
You with me?
So now that I put my dreams for the social good space in writing, I challenge you to think of what your dream is. And how you’ll get there.
What are you going to do to make the world a better place this year?
